The Tablas de Daimiel National Park located in Ciudad Real is being attacked by a drought and a continuous loss of water caused by climate change. Due to the high temperatures recorded in recent months, the amount of evaporated water increases, so the amount of water decreases.
Is already the fourth dry year that the National Park suffers and both the biodiversity it supports and the ecological balance are deteriorating. What happens if the drought continues?
Drought in Tablas de Daimiel
A report has been made that reflects that the absence of rain as a consequence of the fourth dry year that the province of Ciudad Real has registered, with 317,6 liters per square meter collected at the Daimiel meteorological station, has reduced the water supply to the national park, which stopped receiving water through the Guadiana river in mid-July of this year.
Under normal conditions, the national park keeps 1.343 ha of land flooded. Today, it only has 528 ha with water. This generates numerous impacts on the birds, which have no place to rest on their migratory routes. This year a maximum of 60 black storks have been registered in migratory passage, 86 spoonbills and a large presence of ardeidae. This means that the national park is of vital importance for many species of birds, which can be affected by water scarcity.
Impacts
It has become clear that a clogging process is taking place. This occurs as a consequence of the decomposition of the plant remains, which together with the decantation of the suspended solids, are being produced in the lagoon vessel of the park they decrease their ability to store water.
Those responsible for the park are analyzing the high load of nutrients recorded by the sediments. This can be negative, since it produces bad smells and cladophors that give visitors a bad image.
