How are water sleeves formed?

Types of water hoses

Waterspouts, or water hoses as they are also known, can be of two different types: tornadic or non-tornadic.

• Tornadic: as their name suggests, they are tornadoes on water. In order for them to appear, it is necessary that a very severe thunderstorm originates from a supercell. They are rare meteorological phenomena, since tornadoes usually originate on the ground, since the contrast of the air masses is much greater. Still, regardless of where they appear, you have to be very careful, as the wind can blow up to 512km/h.
• Non-tornadic: they usually form under the Cumulus or Cumulonimbus cloud base. They are not as threatening as tornadoes, but you still have to stay away, as the wind can blow 116km/h.

Waterspouts are very common in tropical zoneslike the southeastern coast of the United States. They also appear in southern Florida and the Keys. And, yes, it can be seen in temperate climates, although they are not frequent. The most recent appeared on April 13, 2016, in Galicia (Spain), where one of them made landfall on Cabío beach, in A Pobra do Caramiñal, and caused significant damage to a bar.
