Malta's iconic "Blue Window" collapses

Azure Window, in Malta

Goodbye forever to the spectacular Maltese Azure Window. The strong waves ended up collapsing it around 9.40 am, according to the newspaper »Times of Malta» the resident Roger Chessnell who had come to take photos of this impressive and attractive place on the island.

The forces of nature sculpt the landscapes of our planet, but they can also destroy them over time. The Maltese stone arch, one of the most visited tourist spots in the country, it was formed around thousands of years ago in the same area where it has collapsed.

According to Chessnell, there was a strong swell this morning. The waves must have hit the bases of the pillars of the arch, until suddenly it fell into the sea causing a loud crash, leaving a dense foam in its wake. »When the foam has disappeared, the pillar had also disappeared».

Joseph Muscat, the Prime Minister of Malta, has not been slow to express his regret over the collapse and has published an image of how the place has been left without the iconic "Blue Window". In another message he added that studies had been carried out which had shown that sooner or later natural corrosion would end up hitting it. "That sad day has come," he lamented.

The Gozo Tourism Association mourned the loss of "one of the natural beauties that our island is endowed with." The Maltese have been "orphaned" by the loss of the "Blue Window", although they trust that its disappearance will serve to "open our eyes to all those concerned about caring for, maintaining and protecting as far as possible the tourist places that this island offers».

Without a doubt, this day will be remembered by many. Nature cares and protects, but we must not forget that it is continually "at work", redesigning our world.
