February 2017: warmer and more humid than normal

We have just spent a month that has been characterized by being generally warmer than usual and during which it has rained a lot in much of the Spanish territory.

It was the last month of the meteorological winter, but more than winter, it seemed more like the beginning of spring. The AEMET collects the data in its monthly report, information that I bring you below.

The month of February has had a warm or very warm character in much of the country, except in the Canary archipelago, which was rather cold, or in some parts of Andalusia, north of Madrid, Castilla y La Mancha, and north of Extremadura where temperatures were normal (reference period 1981-2010).

In the center and northwest of Castilla y León, the Basque Country, La Rioja, Navarra, Aragon, Catalonia, Mallorca and Menorca experienced an anomaly of around 2ºC positive. In the rest of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands the anomaly was 1ºC positive.

The maximum temperatures recorded correspond to the Tenerife South airport, with 28,6ºC on the 17th, and at the Lanzarote airport with 27,2ºC, also on 17. 24ºC was registered at the Alicante airport on the 28th, and 23,9ºC in Castellón on the 7th.

As for the minimums, Important frosts occurred on day 9 in Puerto de Navacerrada, with -7,3ºC, and on day 2 in Molina de Aragón with -6ºC.

Last month was generally wet, with an average rainfall of 72mm, a value that is 36% higher than the normal value (53mm). The areas where it has rained the most have been those in the northern half of the peninsula, and in the north of Fuerteventura. In the east of the peninsula and on the islands of Ibiza and Formentera it has been dry or very dry.

In western Galicia, 200mm were exceeded, and in some points of the Central System and Iberian System, the 100mm during the first ten of the month. On the 12th it was especially rainy in the port of Navacerrada, with 137mm, and in Ávila with 51mm.
