Hurricanes are meteorological phenomena that, seen by satellite images, are truly spectacular. But on land things change. They can cause serious damage, to the point that there could even be fatalities.

For this year, according to experts, twelve tropical storms are expected in the Atlantic, of which five will become hurricanes, two of them very strong, in a season whose activity will be average. A hurricane season that officially begins on June 1.

This year the formation of hurricanes will be affected by the weakening of the El Niño phenomenon and by the low temperatures in the North Atlantic. Colorado State University (CSU) researcher and project manager Philip J. Klotzbach said during the National Tropical Climate Conference in South Padre Island, Texas, that they anticipated an average probability of major hurricanes. making landfall off the coast of the United States and in the Caribbean. To be more specific, he indicated that there was a 50% chance that a hurricane will hit the Atlantic coast of the US, and a 30% chance that it will hit Florida or the Gulf of Mexico. With regard to the Caribbean, the chances are of a 40%.

Klotzbach and his team make their predictions every year. This study is carried out by analyzing 29 years of historical data on hurricanes. For 2016, they predict twelve storms that, together, will be active for 50 days. Of these twelve, there will be five that will become hurricanes, two of them very strong.

Klotzbach further said that it suffices for a hurricane to make landfall for it to be considered an active season for that locationno matter how much hurricane activity is predicted, so it is very important to keep an eye on the weather warnings so that problems of any kind do not arise.
