Wormholes

Characteristic of wormholes

When you read about quantum physics and about travel in time or to other dimensions, endless theories emerge through mathematical calculations. In this case, we are going to talk about the wormholes. Surely you have heard of the existence of other worlds or parallel Universes that take place in the same reality in which we exist. Well, a wormhole is the door or tunnel that connects these two points in space and time and that allows us to go from one Universe to another.

Although the existence of something like this has never been proven, in the world of mathematics it is possible that they could appear. Therefore, we are going to dedicate this article to the explanation of wormholes and how they would work if the mathematics were correct.

What are wormholes?

Time travel

This name has thus been put before the representation of the door between the two parallel Universes as if they were the ends of an apple. Thus, we are the worms that cross it to travel through space-time. It can be said that they are fabrics of space-time that allow us to unite two more distant points from each other.

In theory, going from one parallel Universe to another would be faster than traversing our entire Universe at the speed of light. According to Einstein's theory of general relativity, These holes capable of transporting us to other dimensions exist. Mathematical calculations show how we can find such portals, but nothing like it has ever been seen or accomplished.

They have an entrance and an exit at different points in space and time. The path between the two exits is the one that connects the worm and it is in hyperspace. This hyperspace is nothing but a dimension in which gravity and time have caused a distortion, causing this new dimension to be born.

This theory derives from the approach that Einstein and Rosen had when they wanted to investigate what happens inside a black hole. Another name for these holes is Einstein-Rosen Bridge.

There are two types of wormholes depending on the point they are connecting:

  • Intrauniverse: These are those holes that connect two points far from the Cosmos but that belong to the same Universe.
  • Interuniverse: They are the holes that connect two different Universes. These, perhaps, are the most important and desired to discover.

Travels in the time

Journey through a wormhole

Of course, when talking about this kind of thing, the possibility of time travel is always questioned. And it is that surely we have all wanted to travel in time for various reasons such as repairing mistakes in our past, taking advantage of lost time or simply living and experiencing another era.

However, the fact that wormholes exist and that they can be used to travel in space and time are very different things. One of the triggers for people to believe this was possible was the novel "Contact" by Carl Sagan. In said novel it was proposed to carry out a journey through space and time using a wormhole. This novel is pure science fiction and, although it is told in such a way that it seems real, it is not.

The first thing is that the scientists most put into the subject affirm that the duration of a wormhole is very short. This means that if we traveled between its exits through that hyperspace, we would get caught up in it, since the exits would be closed very soon. There is also talk of the one who managed to get out at the other end, could never return. This occurs because the wormhole is not always created in the same place or at the same time, and the probability of finding one that returns to the same point from which it returned is very, very low.

Paradoxes of space and time

Wormholes

According to the theory of general relativity, time travel can be done but with some conditions. The first is that we can only travel to the future and not to the past. This has a logic that can lead to certain paradoxes of space and time. Imagine for a moment that you travel to the past in the time before your birth. Various facts that you can provoke they can alter the course of history and cause you to never have been born. Therefore, if you were not born, you could not travel to the past and you would never have existed.

By the simple fact of disappearing, history would not run its course. You have to think that, although we are not all famous people or that we can do great important things in history on a large scale (such as a president of the government), we also contribute our grain of sand to history. We do things, we provoke events, we move people and we establish links with other people who, if they disappear, they would never have existed and we would create a temporal paradox.

Therefore, if we travel to the future, the course of events will not be altered, because it is something that has not yet happened and it only depends on what we do in the "now". These theories also lead to other forms of Universes and dimensions more complicated than they appear, because we establish more time lines.

Die crushed

Wormhole entry and exit

One fact that can pass us by when it comes to traveling in space-time through wormholes is that we could be crushed to death. These holes they are really small (about 10 ^ -33 cm) and are very unstable. That large amount of gravitational attraction caused by the two ends of the tunnel would cause it to break apart before anyone could fully use it.

Despite this, if we tried to cross from one extreme to another, we would be crushed and turned into dust since gravity at these points reaches an extreme level. Since in theory the mathematical calculations make it possible, it could be possible in the future to create technology that withstands such levels of gravity and travel at great speed before the hole disappears.
