World Meteorological Day 2017

Field and clouds

Today is a very special day for meteorologists: it is the World Meteorological Day. The day in which his work in the dissemination of early warnings that protect the population from extreme meteorological phenomena is commemorated. Without these professionals, the loss of human life would be much greater than it is today.

Obviously, there shouldn't be any, but for this they are working daily in order to predict well in advance when and where the different phenomena will occur so that the population has more time to take action.

Why is World Meteorological Day celebrated?

Just over half a century ago, On a day like today in 1950 the World Meteorological Organization was created (OMM) thanks to an agreement by which 30 member states and territories reached an agreement to disseminate alerts on extreme meteorological phenomena.

It is the only agency authorized by the United Nations to provide official information on climate and weather, and their interaction with the land and oceans.. This year the theme is "Understanding the clouds", as these are very important as they are linked to the environmental conditions of each area.

What activities will be carried out?

On the occasion of # WorldMeteorological Day the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has published four guides available for anyone who wants to download them:

  • General Cloud Identification Guide
  • High cloud classification guide
  • Middle Cloud Classification Guide
  • Low Cloud Classification Guide

In addition, they have uploaded a calendar in which you can see photos of spectacular clouds.

At the AEMET headquarters there will be a conference on the clouds at 11,55am, by Mr. Rubén del Campo, Mr. Fernando Bullón and Mr. José Miguel Viñas. A perfect excuse to learn more about clouds.
