What is the difference between weather and climate?

Cloudy sky

Very often we speak of the weather or the climate as if they were synonymous words, but the reality is that it is not the right thing to do. These two terms have slightly different meanings, so their applications are different.

If you ever wondered what is the difference between weather and climate, don't miss this article 😉.

What is time?

Weather is the atmospheric situation that occurs at a certain moment. It depends on several factors, such as the following:

  • Temperature: is the degree of heat in the air at a given place and time.
  • Wind: is the mass movement of air in the atmosphere.
  • Atmospheric pressure: is the force exerted by the air on the surface of the Earth.
  • Clouds: they are drops of liquid water, or ice if they are high enough, in suspension.

So, for example, if the sky is clear on a summer day, the weather will be sunny.

What is the weather like?

The climate groups all the results obtained about the time of a certain area. All these data are analyzed over the years to be able to establish the weather in that area. In addition, factors such as temperature, wind or pressure, there are others that influence the climate and can significantly modify it, such as the following:

  • Altitude: is the vertical distance that exists between a point on earth and sea level. The higher it is, the climate is usually cooler.
  • Latitude: is the distance that separates a certain place from the equatorial line. The closer to the equator we are, the warmer the climate will be.
  • Ocean currents: they are displacements of water masses due to the action of the wind, tides and the differences in density of two masses. These currents influence the global climate. In Europe, for example, we enjoy a temperate climate thanks, above all, to the Gulf Stream, which carries warm water from America to the European coasts.
