What is the difference between meteorology and climatology?

Field and clouds

There is a lot of confusion about what is meteorology and what is climatology. Although both sciences are dedicated to observing the sky, each of them does so for a different objective.

Therefore, if you have doubts about this topic, I will explain to you below what is the difference between meteorology and climatology so that, from now on, you can use the terms correctly.

What is meteorology?

Meteorology is the science that studies the changes that occur in the atmosphere continuously. To do this, it uses parameters such as air temperature, atmospheric pressure, humidity, wind or rainfall, among others. In this way, they can usually predict the weather in 24 to 48 hours, and usually in the medium term as well.

It is very useful to know it, since it serves as a guide for farmers, but also for airlines, doctors, and in fact, everyone because depending on the weather, our costumes will be different.

What is climatology?

Climograph of Zaragoza

Climograph of Zaragoza (Spain). In this province the climate is continental Mediterranean, with very hot and dry summers and cool and humid winters.

Climatology is the science that studies both climate and its variations over time. It uses the same parameters as meteorology, but with the aim of studying long-term climatic characteristics. Thanks to the data and information obtained, today we can say that planet Earth has different climates: tropical, tempered, polar, oceanic, continental, etc. each with its own characteristics. Thus, for example, while in a tropical climate the average temperature is around 18ºC, in a polar climate this average is around 0 degrees.

For all this, scientists study and analyze the data that have been obtained in recent years, and those that the satellites continuously record.
