Pretty, right? Storm clouds are wonderful. They can measure up to 20km in height, so rarely can they be seen in all their splendor from down here, from the ground. But that is precisely what they were able to do in the Province of Neuquén, in Argentina, on November 30.

There, an incredible Cumulonimbus was formed, which are the clouds that portend storm and rain, serving as inspiration for professional and improvised photographers.

Normally, when Cumulonimbus forms in the region it is usually bad news, since there the rains usually cause many problems, such as flooded streets, evacuations, or landslides; Nevertheless, Last Wednesday the people of Neuquén looked at the sky astonished by the beauty of the spectacular storm cloud.

They photographed it in its different stages, and from different environments: from the buildings, from the Río Negro, ... and there were even those who worked the scene, such as Andrés Killy, who broadcast an impressive timelapse through Facebook that you can see doing click here.

How are Cumulonimbus formed?

cumulonimbus

Cumulonimbus are clouds of great vertical development, which are formed by a column of warm and humid air that rises in a rotating spiral. The base is less than 2km high, but its top reaches 15-20km. They usually produce rains and thunderstorms, especially when they are developed, which is when they adopt an anvil shape with the tip back. It can form in isolation or in groups, or along a cold front.

Depending on where they form and their intensity of rain, they can cause more or less problems. For example, If it rains heavily in a populated area, it will cause flooding and / or landslides. Also, if the right conditions are met, they could cause hailstorms and tornadoes.
