The last days of July and the first of August are being especially hot throughout the island of Mallorca. Temperatures that, although during the day are very high, at night, which is when they should drop, they do not do it enough.

What values are we talking about? Of some that have been melting the island for a few days: 36, 39 degrees ... They have even reached 41ºC. But the worst is not that: the humidity is being very high, around 70%, which causes the thermal sensation to be several degrees higher.

We are in full canicular period and this is being noticed in many parts of Spain, especially in the southern half of the Iberian Peninsula and in the Balearic archipelago. We are about to reach the middle of summer and we have already been through two heat waves, and by an episode of heat that is showing merciless with Mallorca.

The State Meteorological Agency it maintains the orange alert for the risk of temperatures of up to 39ºC for the interior and northwest of the island, and the yellow alert for the risk of temperatures of up to 37ºC in the rest. A situation that can last until Sunday, the day on which the maximums are expected to drop at least 4 degrees with respect to those that are currently being registered.

So far, the highest temperatures on record are:

  • Soller: 41ºC
  • Santa María: 40,4ºC
  • Palma, University: 40,3ºC
  • Llucmajor: 40,2ºC

The minimums have also been very high: for example, in Palma University they registered neither more nor less than 24ºC, and in the Sierra de Alfabia (Bunyola), they had 23ºC. That is there are tropical nights, since the mercury rises above 20ºC. But the most surprising thing is that the night of August 1 in some places it was warmer the whole day before: above 35ºC, as published by the AEMET de Baleares in its Twitter.

Fortunately, the situation will improve a bit in the coming days. But if you are on the island, be careful and do not expose yourself to the sun during the central hours of the day and less without protection 😉.
