Mammals and birds will better adapt to climate change

Faced with the new conditions that generate the effects of climate change, each animal adapts in one way or another. A study published in the journal Nature Ecology shows that mammals and birds are more likely to evolve and adapt to climate change than others such as amphibians and reptiles.

“We see that mammals and birds are better able to extend their habitats, which means that they adapt and change more easily. This would have a profound impact on the levels of extinction and on how our world would look in the future, ”said Jonathan Rolland, from the University of British Columbia (Canada) and author of the research.

To carry out the study, the data of the current geographical distribution of the animals, their fossil records and all the information related to the evolution of the species were used. 11.465 species have been analyzed, from what it has been possible to see where they have lived for the last 270 million years and the environmental conditions they have needed to survive.

Given the characteristics of each animal and its way of life, climate change can affect them in one way or another. This means that some animals can adapt better to the most adverse conditions.

Since this is not the only climate change that has existed in history, Researchers have found that these changes are what determine where animals live.

Rolland stressed that the planet was warm and tropical until 40 million years ago, which made it an ideal place for many species, but as it cooled, birds and mammals were able to adapt to the colder temperatures. that allowed them to move to other habitats.

It is possible that this fact may explain why amphibians and reptiles are rarely seen in the Arctic.

Animals that are able to hibernate, regulate internal temperature, and protect their young will be able to better adapt to climate change.
