Let's talk about geysers

Geyser in iceland

Iceland Geyser

It is a hot spring that regularly expels boiling water and steam. He does it periodically, in the form of a column, and it is very attractive and beautiful to see if it has never been seen before. Its name, Geyser, derives from Geysir, in Iceland. It is because one of the most famous that it has is called that, and in the end its name has been adopted to name this type of sources as a common name.

Iceland is a region very prone to having Geysers. In fact, it is one of the areas of the planet where more "special" phenomena exist, given its location. For this reason, Geysers require to exist a favorable hydrogeology that is found in few places on the planet. There are a thousand around the planet, and half of them are in Yellowstone national park, in United States.

As they are?

There are two kinds. One is a cone type. The other type that exists is font. Both expel the water, following a very similar pattern. If one day we find ourselves in front of a Geyser, and we want to avoid missing the moment of expulsion, it must be said that it occurs in four phases. The first is that steam comes out of the hot water. The second is that the water starts to overflow. Then the surface tension, caused by the water that had cooled, breaks down. And finally expels all that water.

To understand how they can exist, we find the first cause in water. Surface water is filtered into the ground and accumulates in internal cavities. Being very low, and usually in areas where the crust is thinner, the temperature is high. Magma is responsible for raising the temperature, which makes the water heat up to vaporize. That is what causes the pressure to increase, and we have the expulsion phases, mentioned in the previous paragraph.

The time between eruptions of water varies greatly from one geyser to another. One of the most active is found in Iceland, the Strokkur, whose regular expulsions that last seconds occur every 14 minutes. On the other hand, there are others like the Grand Geyser in the United States that expels the water for about 10 minutes, every 8 to 12 hours. There is no exact pattern.

The Fly Geyser

Geyser Fly

You could not miss this wonder of nature that seems taken from the story of Alice in Wonderland. The photo that is appreciated is real, it has no retouching, or with programs, or anything. It exists like this, as it is appreciated, and it is found in the United States. Its location is in a desert area called Gerlach in Nevada. It only has one but, it is not publicly accessible. Because it is located exactly inside a private ranch, called Fly Ranch. For better or worse.

The reason that this Geyser may exist dates back to the year 1916. At that time, a group of men wanted to drill the earth in search of water for crops and animals. And that's how they found it, but at 200ºC. The men, seeing their mistake, wanted to cover it up. Finally, years later, in 1960, the geyser emanated naturally, expelling its boiling water.

The calcium carbonate sediments on the ground have created the most incredible colors, with their expulsions. Green, red, yellow, making it a magical point in the middle of the desert. In case someone is nearby one day and cannot access the place, grab some binoculars. Because although the passage is restricted, it can be seen from the highway that runs through Washoe County.

It should be noted that around the Fly Geyser, there is also a biodiversity, with many plants, lakes and hundreds of birds. Truly an oasis in the middle of the desert. A beauty that hides our beloved planet Earth, which I could not forget in our article dedicated to the Geysers.
