Hurricane Gastón strengthens in the Atlantic, will it reach Spain?

Gaston

Gaston, which went from a tropical storm to a category three hurricane on August 28, 2016, and dropped to category two the next day, is strengthening again in the Atlantic. Fortunately, and at least so far, it is not as strong as the 28 had, but it is still a meteorological phenomenon that keeps many people on edge. Why? Because it is approaching the Azores.

The National Hurricane Center (CNH) of the United States reported that it is located 750 miles (1207km) east of Bermuda and 1445 miles (2325km) west of the Azores.

You can see where Hurricane Gaston is expected to be (circled black) on September 3.

Hurricane Gastón is moving at 16km / h, and hurricane winds of up to 185km / h have already been recorded with gusts exceeding 220km / h. It is the most powerful of the Atlantic hurricane season, so there is much concern about what could happen. But… do we really have to worry? What do the models say?

The truth is that no reason to worry, at least for now. It is expected to head to the British Isles, and yet the sea temperature that the hurricane will encounter as it approaches Europe is lower than that in the Tropics, so that added to that it is expected that the wind in height weaken it, most likely, if it reaches our country it will appear in the form of a storm on the coasts of Galicia towards the weekend.

Can a hurricane reach Spain?

According to statistics, the probability of this happening is very low. Moreover, last year with Hurricane Joaquín a similar situation was experienced, but in the end it only left rains in Galicia. To find one that made landfall we have to go back to 2005, when Vince, who acquired category 1.

So for now we can be calm. But we will have to wait and see what course Hurricane Gastón takes in the end. We will continue to inform.
