Glacial discharge no longer occurs only in summer

Perito Moreno Glacier

During the summer the glacial discharge is something completely normal. Warmer temperatures cause ice to melt quickly. But during the winter the sea at the poles freezes again, or at least that is what it did until humans had such a great impact on the environment.

A group of Spanish scientists has verified that the glacial discharge from both poles has extended outside the summer season. A decade ago, the maximum discharge values were recorded in the months of July and August. Now runs from June to October.

The latest measurements of these professionals with the project Glakma (GLAciares, CrioKarts and Environment) seem to indicate that the trend could continue to expand even further: in the past month of May the registered values have been more typical of the beginning of the summer. These glacial discharge data in the Northern Hemisphere are being carried out in glaciers in the Swedish Arctic, Vatnajökull ice cap (Iceland), glaciers in Svalbard (Norway) and in the northern Urals (Russia).

On the other hand, in the Southern Hemisphere, measurements are made in three glaciers located in insular Antarctica, Argentine Patagonia, and Chilean Patagonia. Thus, they can have a glacier observation network in both hemispheres, which allows to have a comparative control of the discharge of glaciers according to the evolution of the climate. A climate that is getting warmer and warmer in many parts of the world, so that due to the thaw the sea level rises.

Iceland glacier

Sea level rise is already being measured. Global warming is taking place. As reported by GLACKMA, Any of the two intermediate variables could be used to measure the evolution of the rise in temperatures, which are the ambient temperature and the glacial liquid discharge. The latter is a very stable variable, so net maximum and minimum values are obtained.
