On July 24, Giant Jets were captured through the Gemini cloud chamber at the top of Manua Kea, Hawaii. Giant Jets are a very rare type of upward beam to see. It is a type of phenomenon similar to Sprites, but more powerful and easier to see with the naked eye due to its large magnitudes. The existence of the Goblins, that's what this type of ray is called, and that they have had multiple names over time to be cataloged, they are so atypical that their existence had always been doubted.
Sprites, were not first registered until 1989, by physicist John R. Winkler and his group of scientists at the University of Minnesota. And even though the first visual evidence was found back then, it was not until "just" 2002 that a Giant Jet was captured. The reports of the existence of these phenomena actually date from 1886, but they had never been officially witnessed. Yet in theory they existed, as shown by the Nobel laureate in physics Charles Wilson in 1925.
Understanding the Duende rays
As shown in the video, you can "fleetingly" witness the three jets that resulted. The highest reached 80km, to the ionosphere.
This type of lightning occurs above the clouds or cumulonimbus in intense storms in the part of the atmosphere called the mesosphere. In the lower area they have a blue filamentous area that can reach 30km. At the top it is like a bright flash of red and orange color. They can reach up to 90km in altitude, and in width up to 50km.
They are very rare to occur, but there are exceptions in which there are storms that occur in quantity. Always with durations between 3 and 10 milliseconds. Its study due to these characteristics is very difficult. When they originate, they do so at 1.600km / s. And due to its short duration, it is almost impossible to film them with normal cameras.
