Experts are alarmed by the formation of blue lakes in Antarctica

One of the most devastated and affected areas on the planet is Antarctica. Climate change and global warming are the two main reasons why the ice is melting in Antarctica by leaps and bounds.

The issue becomes much more complicated after a group of researchers have observed the formation of about 8.000 lakes due to melting ice that has been occurring since 2000.

These are beautiful blue lakes that cause the melting of the ice sheet throughout Antarctica to accelerate in a really worrying way. This is the first time that this phenomenon has been observed in eastern Antarctica where the largest mass of ice on Earth is found. Until now, no melt problems had been detected in this area, but the effects of climate change are beginning to be felt in that part of Antarctica.

According to experts on the subject, these blue lakes are formed in the summer season due to high temperatures and usually form rivers under the ice, which facilitates the dreaded thaw. Although the size of these lakes is still not too great, en the event that global warming continues to worsen, it may cause the number of lakes in Antarctica to increase in a really worrying way in the coming years.

The issue is much more serious than it seems at first glance since there could be a long-term rise in sea level of up to six meters, which could cause the disappearance of a large number of coastal cities around the planet. Finally, it should be remembered that East Antarctica is the largest mass of ice on the planet, so the problem would be even more serious.
