Evidence of the existence of climate change

cold winters are not evidence that climate change does not exist

Today and with the existing evidence on climate change, there are still people who deny it. People who don't believe that climate change exists. Without going any further, we have the President of the United States, Donald Trump, who denies the existence of global climate change. He thinks it is an invention of the Chinese to gain competitiveness.

It is normal that in certain areas of the world this can be debated. Because according to climate change, our planet is warming. However, in many areas of the planet cold winters are being recorded, breaking records of low temperatures. If this is so, Does climate change really exist? Why are we wrong in denying its existence?

Evidence that makes it seem that climate change does not exist

ice in Antarctica is growing for years

97% of the scientific community affirms the existence of global climate change. To do this, although colder temperatures are observed in certain areas of the planet, however, it is wrong to use this evidence to deny the existence of climate change that affects the entire world.

The phenomenon of El Niño it is the main protagonist of all these climatic events that can confuse the whole world. More or less, it works in cycles of four years and is detected in the area of the west coast of South America. The warmer temperatures of the ocean currents affect the trade winds around the world and that is why long winter storms can be generated in regions like Europe. This is the explanation why we find winters so cold, not because climate change does not exist.

There is also other evidence that can lead to denying climate change. It is about of the ice growth that Antarctica has experienced in recent years. This is the complete opposite of what is happening in the Arctic, which has less and less ice. The explanation for this is that Antarctica, due to its position, is surrounded by strong winds and ocean currents that protect it. In this way it is more sheltered from the external effects of the weather.

Evidence of true climate change

evidence of climate change

Although these previous evidences can lead us to doubt about the existence of a global climate change, the reality is different. In recent years, planet Earth has experienced an anomalous increase in temperatures since systematic measurements began back in 1880.

2016 was the hottest year on record, with 2015 and 2014 taking second and third place respectively. According to him Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC), the average global temperature has increased by 0,85 degrees Celsius from 1880 to 2012.

So, despite the fact that there are cold spells in certain areas of the planet, we cannot just focus on that. We have to analyze the total trend of the temperatures of the entire planet. There are people who have studied the climatic changes that the Earth has had throughout history and they concern this fact that the current climate change it is nothing more than a natural fluctuation and that the human being has not intervened in it.

It is true that the Earth's climate has changed throughout history, but what leads to think that it is the human being the cause of this, is the speed with which this climate change is happening. That is, changes in the global climate throughout the history of the Earth have occurred through natural processes that have taken millions of years to happen. However, current global warming is happening in a matter of 150 years. This is due in large part to greenhouse gas emissions from our economic activities and the evidence of this is the multiple studies and knowledge we have about the characteristics of these gases.

There is still more evidence of climate change that we will see in the next post.
