Consequences of the La Niña phenomenon

La Niña phenomenon

It is increasingly likely that the phenomenon La niña, as revealed in a NOAA report, but what exactly will happen with this weather? What consequences do we have to face in the coming months?

El Niño is slowly weakening, which is certainly good news considering that it has been the most intense in recent times, but we may not have to rejoice so soon. La Niña could cause major natural disasters.

What is the La Niña phenomenon?

Flood caused by the La Niña phenomenon

The phenomenon La Niña is part of the global cycle known as El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). This is a cycle that has two phases: the warm one, which is known as El Niño, and the cold one, which is what, in all probability we will have in the coming months, known as La Niña.

This begins when the trade winds blow very strongly from the west causing the equatorial temperatures to decrease.

When that happens, the consequences are not slow to be noticed around the world.

Consequences of the La Niña phenomenon

What we can expect from this phenomenon is the following:

  • Increased rainfall in Southeast Asia, parts of Africa, Brazil and Australia, where floods would become common.
  • The frequency of tropical storms and hurricanes in the United States is increasing.
  • Snowfall that could be historic in some parts of the US.
  • There will be significant droughts in the western Americas, in the Gulf of Mexico, and in northeast Africa. The temperature in these places could be somewhat lower than usual.
  • In the case of Spain and Europe in general, rainfall could increase significantly.
