Climate change and El Niño will starve 10 million people

Climate Change

Both phenomena are seriously modifying the climate. Droughts are becoming more extreme in some places, and torrential rains wreak havoc in other parts of the globe, not to mention the increasing occurrence of extreme weather events where, in theory, they would not happen.

The non-governmental organization Oxfam has warned that climate change and El Niño will starve 10 million people.

Humanity without agriculture cannot survive, but agriculture, being completely dependent on the climate, is difficult to control. If it does not rain enough, there will be no water to irrigate the crops throughout the season, and this will cause many people go hungry. In addition, the price of cultivated food will rise significantly, since it will be increasingly difficult to access the precious liquid that must keep plants alive.

For example maize harvest in Zimbabwe is 35% below averageAnd the worst is yet to come, as by February next year there will be 2 million people in Malawi who will have a hard time finding food. In Ethiopia, on the other hand, they will be 4 million people who will need help… This year, 2015. The situation is alarming.

Extreme drought

But not only the African continent is having a bad time, also Central America, such as Honduras or Guatemala. Cultivation fields are totally or partially lost as a consequence of the drought.

2014 went down in history for being one of the warmest; however, 2015 will far exceed the records of the previous year. So much so that has already been placed behind 2003.

Due to the increase in temperatures, the "El Niño" phenomenon is increasingly unpredictable, so it is more than likely that in 2016 the consequences will be even greater.

We will see how the year is presented.
