You have probably heard about the meteorological phenomenon known as El Niño in the past year. What you probably do not know is that there is a totally opposite phenomenon that receives the name of La Niña and that usually occurs on these dates, once the El Niño phenomenon has ended.

Then I will tell you a little more about La Niña and of the effects it produces in various areas of the planet.

The La Niña phenomenon usually causes a sharp drop in temperatures and strong periods of drought in areas near the Pacific. It usually lasts a few months and the most intense occurred during the year 1988/1989.

Regarding the effects it produces, it is worth noting an intensification of the alder winds causing the sea level to decrease on the coasts of Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. There is a concentration of a high temperature in the oceans of the equatorial Pacific zone which causes more cloudiness and more intense rainfall.

The La Niña phenomenon is much more intense the less it lasts in time and the greatest impact usually occurs in the first months of this phenomenon. Unlike El Niño, La Niña occurs less frequently in the 4-7 year interval.

According to the latest information from experts on the subject, the El Niño phenomenon is dissipating due to the fact that the ocean surface is cooling, However, this fact is an indication of the arrival of the aforementioned La Niña phenomenon. The predictions of the meteorological experts are not at all positive and it seems that La Niña could turn out to be worse than El Niño himself. We will have to wait a few weeks to know the magnitude of this phenomenon totally contrary to the famous El Niño phenomenon.
