The rise in sea level as a consequence of the melting of the poles, the rise in temperatures around the world, and the progressive increase in the frequency of floods, are making Europe begin to take climate change very seriously.
A series of adaptation measures are being taken in order to protect the coasts and prevent disaster from occurring. But what are those measurements?
Despite the fact that climate change has been excluded from the G20 thanks to Donald Trump, In the Old Continent there are eleven European municipalities that the European Environment Agency has identified as good examples of adaptation to this problem that sooner or later will end up affecting us all, and they are: Bilbao (Spain), Lisbon (Portugal), Copenhagen (Denmark), Hamburg (Germany), Ghent (Belgium), Malmo (Sweden), Bratislava (Slovakia ), Smolyan (Bulgaria), Paris (France), Amsterdam (Holland) and Bologna (Italy).
Among the measures to be adopted are: construction of structures that protect against flooding, the establishment of water tanks and the naturalization of cities placing plants on rooftops, creating community gardens and / or planting trees.
In the specific case of Bilbao, a new flood-proof neighborhood called Zorrotzaurre is going to be built. The district will be on an artificial peninsula linked to the mainland by a bridge. Citizens can feel very safe, as a large barrier will be installed to protect them from flooding. But the measures do not end in Zorrotzaurre, but also the ground level of the buildings will be raised and new green spaces will be created.
On the other hand, in Copenhagen a plan has been drawn up to raise the floors at the entrances and facilities of the new metro, and also, where possible, in the old one.
Thus, perhaps the consequences of climate change are not so disastrous.
