Why does it rain less in Spain?

The rains have finally arrived on our peninsula, although it will do so for a very short time, unfortunately. It had not rained for almost 50 days and now, almost widely throughout Spain, it has rained again.

The periods of drought that we are dragging on are reducing the amount of dammed water and, therefore, the water resources of our country. Despite the fact that the rains will fall in the next few days, the situation of anticyclonic stability is expected to return next week. Why is it that Spain always has an anticyclone and such good weather? The reason is because of the Azores Anticyclone. Do you want to know more about it?

Azores anticyclone

the anticyclone of the Azores drives away the rains of Spain

When summer arrives and the amount of incident solar radiation is greater, an area of high pressure that forms an anticyclone swells. The anticyclone acts as a shield and does not allow the fronts to reach most of Spain, therefore, there will be no rains. The only area that is more unprotected is the north, so it is possible to sneak in the fronts that run through central Europe. For this reason, our summer registers very little rain and many sunny days, and only in the north can we find more abundant rainfall.

In winter, this anticyclone becomes smaller and retreats to the south. This situation will allow the entry of fronts from the Atlantic and only some of the south and the Canary Islands will be protected. It will also allow free passage to the entry of cold winds from the north.

The fact that some springs or autumns are rainier or less, depends on the oscillations of the Azores anticyclone, it does not usually move smoothly, but bounces up and down. When the boat turns down, it allows the fronts to enter the Iberian Peninsula, and when it turns up it prevents the fronts from approaching our peninsula, giving us sunny days and good weather.

With this information, you can already know why we have such a stable climate on our peninsula.
