Spain needs 300.000 electric cars in 2020 to fight climate change

The Spanish population is increasing a lot and rapidly. This would not be a very serious problem if it were to bet on renewable energies, but since it is not like that, the transport sector is responsible for 24% of greenhouse gas emissions in the country.

According to the report "A decarbonized transport model for Spain in 2050", prepared by Alberto Amores, partner in charge of Energy and Natural Resources at the Monitor Deloitte consultancy, a total of 300.000 electric cars are required by 2020.

In 2015, only 6500 electric cars circulated on Spanish roads, a figure that is equivalent to a market share of 0,2%, which is well below other European countries, such as Norway (23%) or the Netherlands (10%). ). For this reason, Alberto Amores said that »If Spain wants to reach the objectives of the European Union, it must reduce its emissions by between 80 and 90% compared to 1990».

To get it, between 6.000 and 11.000 million euros must be invested between now and 2030, with annual items of around 650 million in electrical transport. Thus, the electrification of transport could be allowed, which would help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

That money would be used for three types of incentives: to the purchase of the electric car (between 2000 and 6000 million euros), to the charging infrastructure (between 3000 and 5000 million euros), and the infrastructure for the development of the freight railway (between 10 thousand and 17 billion euros), which would give a total of between 15 thousand and 28 billion euros that should be invested apart from this year.

According to the author, there is still a lot of work to do. There are only 1700 charging posts in the entire Spanish territory, and it considers that there should be 4000 by 2020, 45.000 by 2025 and 80.000 by 2030.
