Mexico and Japan, two countries victims of earthquakes

Seismic waves

The tectonic plates continue to be noticed. Two weeks ago, a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 8.2 shook Mexico, and yesterday was another, this time of magnitude 7.1, which again affected the country. But not only in America are they causing problems, but also in Asia, where in Japan it has been the victim of one of 6.1.

Earth movements are normal on the planet we live on, but when they are so strong, the consequences for humans can be catastrophic.

Yesterday, September 20, 2017, an earthquake occurred at 13.14:20.14 p.m. local time (100:XNUMX p.m. Spanish peninsular time), with its epicenter in the limits of Morelos, which is very close to the capital (about XNUMXkm). Due to this, and although the magnitude has been lower than the previous one, the damage has been much greater.

More than 40 buildings collapsed, including two schools. In one of them, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto confirmed that at least 21 children had died and another 30 were still missing. The citizens, despite the fear they felt, did not hesitate to help the survivors and remove them from the rubble.

Sensors did not activate

Mexico experienced one of the worst earthquakes in 1985. That time, about 10.000 people died. To prevent it from happening again, every September 19 an evacuation drill is held in Mexico City. However, two hours after the test, the alarms did not go off, which they did two weeks ago. Why? Why They are located in the coastal areas, and the epicenter has been in Morelos, in the center of the country. So the tremor could not be detected in time for the population to be able to reach safety.

Damage that has occurred

There are several damages that the earthquake has produced. Among them, Cuts in the light service (a total of 3.8 million people were affected), collapse of buildings and homes and gas leaks. In addition, 225 people have lost their lives, 94 of them in the capital, 71 in Morelos, 43 in Puebla, 12 in the State of Mexico, 4 in Guerrero and 1 in Oaxaca.

Japan, still recovering after the passage of Typhoon Talim, has suffered a magnitude 6.1 earthquake. The earthquake occurred at 12.37:281 hours (ET), XNUMX kilometers southeast of the city of Kamaishi, in Iwate prefecture, in the northeast of the country.

It has been recorded more than 320 kilometers east of the city of Fukushima, where in 2011 there was a serious nuclear accident triggered by the earthquake and the subsequent tsunami on March 11 of that year. Fortunately, there are no casualties and no tsunami warning has been issued.
