Kiribati, the archipelago that could disappear before 2100

Kiribati

The Kiribati archipelago, located in the west central Pacific Ocean, northeast of Australia, could disappear if the ice at the poles continues to melt. The sea, on which they depend so much to survive, could cause them many problems since the islands that form it are less than 2 meters above the level of its waters.

This tropical paradise, where 110.470 people live together, could be submerged before the end of the century, unless steps are taken to prevent it.

And that is precisely what they hope to do. And they will not do it alone, but they will receive the help of a team of engineers from the United Arab Emirates, who erected in that country the largest artificial island in the world called Palm Islands. As they explained, they had to seek adaptation strategies beyond migration, raising the soil of Kiribati, since an artificial island would not be able to withstand neither high tides nor storms.

The project has an estimated budget of 100 million dollars and has been classified as »creative solution». To do this, they would use land from the dredging of internal lagoons. Although, meanwhile, the problems in Kiribati continue.

Floods are more and more frequent, because the dikes no longer support the impact of the waves. The melting of the poles is a threat to all those who live close to sea level, such as residents of Kiribati, whose government bought the fijian island Vanua Levu as reported by The Guardian, or that it is studying the option of moving the population on top of a gigantic floating platform.

The global warming we are experiencing is testing our adaptability. But, Wouldn't it be better to take steps to stop it? Many countries have ratified the Paris Climate Agreement, but… it remains to be seen whether the necessary measures will actually be taken to counter it. Otherwise, many countries will be submerged.
