Giordano Bruno

Giordano Bruno

In ancient times there were people who did not believe in evolution or in the discovery of certain things. Modifying what was already in place and what was believed to be true could not change overnight because a new person said that it is so. This is what happened to Giordano Bruno for contradicting the population about the fact that the Earth was not the center of the Universe.

In this article we are going to explain to you what happened to Giordano Bruno and what his exploits were.

Who was Giordano Bruno?

Bruno's life problems

This is a man who devoted most of his life to philosophy and theology. He was very religious and also wrote poetry and plays. He was born in 1548 in Nola Napoles. He was sentenced to death by the Holy Inquisition because he did a revealing act against the church, stating that the Earth was not the center of the Universe.

As we know today, our planet belongs to the Solar system, made up of 8 other planets that have their orbits around the Sun. In 1548 there was no such technology to know our position in the Universe. As human beings have always been, they have sinned self-centeredness and, of course, in this case, we believed we were the center of everything. Giordano Bruno was sentenced to death and, a few days before, Pope Clement VIII gave him the opportunity to renounce his ideas and repent.

The story goes that Bruno did not renounce his beliefs even by burning at the stake. He was firm to his ideals until the end. Now it can be concluded that a man, whose discovery was advanced for his time, was cruelly murdered by human self-centeredness and the church.

Your problems already started when he dared to read the forbidden texts of the Dutch philosopher Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam. This happened in the year 1575 and, from that moment, Bruno was put in the spotlight. This was only the beginning of his problems. His beliefs from a very young age were a threat to the church, since he had his own way of understanding theology. The more religious community suffered from discomfort when hearing the things that Bruno had to say about Earth despite being also a religious person.

Problems in life

The inquisition and Bruno

Given his diverse beliefs for his age (which has finally been found to be true), Giordano is said to have never been accepted by the religious. He was ordained a priest and was accused of being a heretic. Because of this he had to leave the Order and be excommunicated. He later converted to Calvinism, although his critical ideas led to his speedy imprisonment.

Not only was Bruno persecuted by the Inquisition for having ideals or beliefs that did not agree with religion, but various intellectuals were cruelly attacked by the same ones who tried to preach the word of God and bring peace to the world.

Throughout his life, just he was really happy and managed to have some peace during the years he was in London, Paris and Oxford. Only there was he able to develop his skills well, gaining fame as the author of various works of theology.

He also began to reinforce some of his ideas about science and heliocentric theory of Nicolás Copernicus and the Solar System. These theories were also under continuous threats by the Inquisition and it was supported by Galileo Galilei.

Ideology ahead of its time

Theory that the Earth is not the center of the Universe

And there have been people who have been too advanced for the time in which they lived. A professor from the Department of Physics of the State University of Sao Paulo (UNESP) named Rodolfo Langhi assured that Bruno knew and supported the fact that the Sun was the center of the Universe. What's more, he had developed various theories based on what he had learned. He affirmed that the Universe was infinite and that it did not have a single center as we know it. That is, there were more inhabited worlds like Earth and that each group of planets revolved around its own center.

Bruno already thought in the year 1575 that in the Universe there were many other planets such as Earth and many other giant stars such as the Sun. He affirmed that there were more planets beyond Saturn that revolved around the Sun. Later, after the discoveries of Uranus, Neptuno y Pluto in 1871m 1846 and 1930, respectively, it was shown that he was not wrong.

The problem Bruno had with society was that he did not base his beliefs on scientific data and evidence. On the contrary, he was thinking about religious beliefs and that is what was giving him more and more problems until he was in the spotlight of the Inquisition. After being accused of a heretic, he had to leave Paris in 1586. He wrote numerous articles in which he insulted Church officials and members simply to reaffirm his ideas.

After leaving Paris he went to Germany where he took refuge in Lutheranism. They also expelled him from there over time.

The end of Giordano Bruno

Death at the stake by Giordano Bruno

The worst mistake of his life without a doubt was that of returning to Italy after 15 years of leaving. And it is that he was betrayed by the noble Giovanni Mocenigo who, under the excuse that Bruno was his teacher, He invited him to his house and it is where he handed him over to the Venetian Inquisition.

When he had the corresponding trial, he put aside the arrogance and arrogance that he had had all these years and treated the jury very well. However, it was too late to go a few steps back. The verdict was that he was publicly burned at the stake at the hands of the Inquisition. Although he claimed that his preaching They were not religion, but philosophy, he died at the stake, cremated in the year 1600.

As you can see, true disseminators of the truth have been cruelly murdered throughout history by the Church. I hope that with this information you can learn more about the life of Giordano Bruno.
