China's glaciers are threatened by global warming

Mountains of china

Rising temperatures could leave us without glaciers in many regions of the world. China, which is one of the most polluting countries, could see 60 percent of its own disappear in the coming decades.

Although measures are being taken to delay their extinction as much as possible, such as road renovations to reduce polluted dust, it is sadly not enough. Most of China's glaciers, if this continues, will eventually become extinct.

In China there are 46.377 glaciers, 46 percent, that is, 8, are found only in the national reserves of Xinjiang. The most worrying thing is that 18.311% of those in these reserves are small, so could disappear in just half a century, as reported by the Chinese information portal The Paper cited by Global Times.

"If global temperatures continue to rise as they are now, the glaciers in the Tian Shan Mountains will disappear," explained the head of the Tianshan Glaciological Station of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Li Zhongqin,

Central Tian Shan Mountains

If they finally disappear, the inhabitants of the region would have serious problems, since they serve as a source of water but also to help adjust the imbalance of water resources throughout the area. At the moment, what he does know is that the Tian Shan glacier No. 1 in April 2017 contracted 7,2 meters, 0,8 meters more than the same month in 2016. Due to this rapid thaw, Chinese scientists hope that the regional government can accelerate its efforts to prevent them from disappearing altogether.

But also, if the rest of the world did everything possible to prevent global average temperatures from continuing to rise, not only glaciers in China could have a chance to recover, but also those in other regions of the planet. Thus, we would end up reducing the consequences of climate change.
