As the planet warms, the ice at the poles melts causing the sea level to rise progressively. Although there are people who are skeptical of global warming, the sad reality is that each year the surface area of glaciers is shrinking, like the Mendenhall Glacier in Alaska.
To show the world what is happening, photographer James Balong created a program called Extreme Ice Survey, in which, through photographs is trying to raise awareness about the impact that humans have on the planet. Thus, and with videos in fast motion, it is demonstrating that the melting of the ice is real. The one we are going to show you is one of them.
The Mendenhall Glacier in Alaska decreased neither more nor less than 550 meters from 2007 to 2015. During winter the frozen surface increases and with the arrival of summer it decreases, which is normal due to the drop / rise in temperatures experienced by the region during these seasons. However, you can see how there is less ice each year.
Global warming is causing ice to lose, and faster and faster. Last year during the winter the Arctic buoys marked one or two fat above zero, when they should be 30 degrees below zero. Thus, the thaw started earlier: May 13, which was the earliest date in 73 years of records.
It is a worrying situation. If all the glaciers in the world melted, our world would never be the same again. We would have to make new maps, because the islands and coasts would be under water.
Today in many regions they are already having problems with floods. In Europe they have begun to take measures to avoid disaster. The question is, will we be acting on time?
