I love tornadoes. They can be tremendously devastating, but I don't think you have to be afraid of them, but respect. Thus we can be willing to understand them, to study them, which will help us to predict them more accurately, avoiding disastrous consequences.
These meteorological phenomena have been the protagonists of some films, such as those of Twister or that of In the eye of the storm. But what do you know about them? Here you have 4 curiosities about tornadoes that, sure, surprise you.
1.- United States, the place where tornadoes occur most
Tornadoes are common in this region of the world during the spring months (April-May). So many are produced that it is believed that 75% of them are formed there, specifically in the Tornado Corridor, which is an area that includes parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska.
Where do the remaining 25% tornadoes form? All over the world except Antarctica.
2.- 500km / h, the incredible speed of a tornado wind
The strongest wind is generated within a tornado. It cannot yet be measured exactly, but estimates can be made. Thus, you can know that the wind from a tornado that formed in Oklahoma in 1999 blew at the incredible speed of 500km / h.
3.- Tornadoes sometimes travel in groups
It is what is known as »Wave of tornadoes» or Tornado Outbreak in English. In the United States they can form groups of up to 24, although the normal thing is that they are from 6 to 10.
4.- Never underestimate the strength of a tornado
As much as you love these phenomena, if you do not go with an appropriate vehicle and if you do not have the proper knowledge, you do not have to get too close. The ideal is to always stay at a distance greater than 2km. Keep in mind at all times that tornadoes, if they are intense like those of F4 or F5, can blow up trucks, cars, destroy houses, and uproot trees.
